5 Most Common Types of Copper Tubes Today and Their Applications

28/2/2026

In modern HVAC systems, copper tubes are indispensable thanks to their superior thermal conductivity, high durability, and excellent pressure resistance. With a wide variety of product types available, each copper tube is designed to meet different technical requirements and project needs.

In this article, let’s explore the 5 most common types of copper tubes on the market today and their practical applications.

1. Overview of Copper Tubes

Copper tubes are manufactured from refined copper and are known for their excellent heat transfer capability, corrosion resistance, and high-pressure tolerance.

Thanks to these advantages, copper tubes are widely used in air conditioning systems, refrigeration equipment, refrigerant gas lines, industrial manufacturing, and many other technical fields.

Today’s market offers various copper tube specifications, dimensions, and characteristics to meet the increasingly diverse demands of HVAC contractors and businesses.

2. The 5 Most Common Types of Copper Tubes and Their Applications

2.1. Pancake Coil (PC) Copper Tube

PC copper tubes are the most widely used type in residential air conditioning systems due to their high flexibility. The coil format allows technicians to cut tubes to the required length for connecting outdoor and indoor units.

Technically, PC tubes are made from 99.9% pure refined copper, with clean and smooth inner and outer surfaces. Common sizes include Ø6.35, Ø9.52, Ø12.7, and Ø15.88, with a minimum wall thickness of 0.61 mm, meeting ASTM B280 standards.

Each coil is supplied in lengths ranging from 15m to 45m and sealed at both ends to maintain internal cleanliness during storage.

Applications:
  • Refrigerant piping for residential and central air conditioning systems
  • Connecting indoor and outdoor AC units
  • Installation in apartments, townhouses, and office buildings
  • Systems requiring flexible bending during installation

2.2. Level Wound Coil (LWC) Copper Tube

LWC copper tubes, also known as large-length coils, are designed for industrial refrigeration systems and large-scale manufacturing. Each coil can reach hundreds or even thousands of meters, significantly reducing the number of joints — a critical factor in maintaining system tightness.

LWC tubes typically have higher rigidity than PC tubes, ensuring uniform wall thickness, bright surface finish, and precise tolerance. Cutting, straightening, and shaping require skilled handling to prevent structural deformation.

Applications:
  • Manufacturing air conditioners, refrigerators, and freezers
  • Central air conditioning systems and chillers
  • Industrial refrigeration systems
  • Automated production lines requiring long tube lengths

2.3. Pre-Insulated Copper Tube (PE Foam Insulated)

This type of copper tube is pre-wrapped with PE insulation foam, typically 6–13 mm thick. The closed-cell foam structure provides low thermal conductivity and effectively prevents condensation.

The insulation material has high elasticity and can withstand temperatures ranging from -80°C to 110°C, protecting the tube from impact while minimizing heat loss during operation.

Applications:
  • Residential and commercial air conditioning installation
  • Ceiling-mounted AC systems, VRV/VRF systems
  • Concealed wall and ceiling installations requiring anti-condensation performance

2.4. Straight Copper Tube

Straight copper tubes are manufactured in rigid lengths from 2m to 6m, offering uniform wall thickness, structural stability, and a smooth surface finish.

This type is commonly used in equipment manufacturing and projects requiring high structural integrity. Its key advantages include strong pressure resistance and ease of fabrication into fittings such as elbows, tees, reducers, or specialized valve connections.

Applications:
  • Heat exchanger manufacturing (condensers and evaporators)
  • Hot water supply and high-pressure systems
  • Refrigeration fittings production (elbows, tees, connectors)
  • Medical gas pipeline systems

2.5. Inner Grooved Copper Tube

Inner grooved copper tubes are premium products designed with small spiral grooves along the inner wall. This structure increases the contact surface area between the refrigerant and the tube wall, significantly improving heat transfer efficiency.

Thanks to precise groove-forming technology, these tubes can maintain strong pressure resistance even with thinner wall thickness, enhancing overall system performance.

Applications:
  • Air conditioning condensers
  • Water heater systems
  • Air conditioning evaporators
  • Automotive air conditioning systems
  • High-efficiency heat exchange coils
